Habitats critical to Sarasota Bay marine life include wetlands, seagrasses and hard bottom. These ecological characteristics were changed primarily due to dredge-and-fill operations that took place in the 1950’s to provide boat access to waterfront home sites. To mitigate the damage, SBEP has embarked on an aggressive program to recreate these lost habitats as well as improve those that still exist.
On a habitat restoration project the role of SBEP is generally to act as project manager. They bring together the partners, the funding and work with the contractors who do planning, permitting and construction. And they engage volunteers to help with re-vegetation. To find out more
